Quem já domina taller e more careful aprende the tallest e the most careful com pouco esforço. Os deslizes dos brasileiros estão nos detalhes: a preposição depois do superlativo (in the world, e não of the world), o the e a diferença entre most people e the most.

Como formar: the + -est ou the most

As regras repetem as do comparativo:

  • Uma sílaba: the + adjetivo + -est (the smallest, the fastest). A ortografia também é a mesma: wide → the widest, thin → the thinnest.
  • Duas sílabas terminadas em -y: -iest (the funniest, the laziest).
  • Demais adjetivos com duas sílabas ou mais: the most + adjetivo (the most popular, the most comfortable).

AdjetivoComparativoSuperlativo

widewiderthe widest
thinthinnerthe thinnest
funnyfunnierthe funniest

  • This is the smallest room in the house.Este é o menor quarto da casa.
  • Who is the funniest person you know?
  • It's the most comfortable sofa in the store.É o sofá mais confortável da loja.

Irregulares e the least

  • That was the best pizza I've had in years.
  • This is the worst traffic of the week.Este é o pior trânsito da semana.
  • Which tour is the least tiring?Qual passeio é o menos cansativo?

Depois do superlativo: in ou of?

  • in + lugar, grupo ou organização: in the country, in Europe, in my team, in the building, in the firm.
  • of + período de tempo ou conjunto de itens, muitas vezes com número ou all: of the decade, of my career, of the two, of them all.
Use inUse of
the longest river in Europethe happiest year of my life
the tallest girl in the classthe warmest week of the summer
the cheapest hotel in townthe oldest of the four sisters
the best singer in the choirthe most useful of all
  • Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe.
  • That was the strangest night of my life.

  • One of the + superlativo + plural: one of the biggest stadiums.
  • Reforços: by far (de longe) e easily intensificam: by far the cheapest. Com ordinais: the third tallest, the second most expensive.
  • This is the spiciest dish I've ever tried.
  • Maracanã is one of the most famous stadiums in the world.O Maracanã é um dos estádios mais famosos do mundo.
  • She is by far the fastest swimmer on the team.
  • Brasília is the third most visited city here.Brasília é a terceira cidade mais visitada daqui.

Igualdade: as + adjetivo + as

  • Modificadores: just as (exatamente tão), almost / nearly as (quase tão), half as, twice as (metade, o dobro).
  • Com substantivos: as much + incontável, as many + plural contável: as much sugar as, as many chairs as.
  • Fórmulas fixas: as soon as possible, as far as I know, as good as new.
  • My little brother is already as tall as my mother.
  • The tea is just as sweet as the juice.O chá está tão doce quanto o suco.
  • This suitcase weighs half as much as that one.Esta mala pesa metade do que aquela.
  • Send me the file as soon as you can.Me mande o arquivo assim que puder.

Desigualdade: not as...as

A negativa not as...as (mais raramente not so...as) quer dizer "não tão... quanto", isto é, "menos... do que".

  • The train is faster than the bus. (superioridade)
  • The bus is less fast than the train. (correto, mas pouco natural)
  • The bus isn't as fast as the train. (a mais natural)
  • The sequel isn't as funny as the first film.A continuação não é tão engraçada quanto o primeiro filme.
  • I don't have as many followers as my cousin.Não tenho tantos seguidores quanto meu primo.
  • It wasn't as crowded as I feared.Não estava tão cheio quanto eu temia.

Exceções e casos especiais

Possessivo no lugar do the

Se houver um possessivo (my, her, Ana's, the school's), ele ocupa o lugar do the; os dois não aparecem juntos.

  • He is my oldest friend.Ele é meu amigo mais antigo.
  • Chile's longest river is the Loa.O rio mais longo do Chile é o Loa.

Most sem the: "a maioria" ou "muito"

Most + substantivo, sem the, quer dizer "a maioria": most students, most cities. Se vier um determinante, usa-se most of: most of the students, most of my money. Não existe the most of the students. Em registro formal, most + adjetivo sem artigo equivale a "muito": It was most generous of you.

  • Most cats hate water.A maioria dos gatos odeia água.
  • Most of the guests had already left.

Advérbios no superlativo: the é opcional

  • Who sings (the) loudest in the shower?Quem canta mais alto no chuveiro?
  • Of all the speakers, he explained the ideas the most clearly.
